It is becoming increasingly clear to me that as a community we have started worshiping the men who inspire us — our leaders, scholars and guides — showering them in adulation, far beyond their station. We make them great beyond question: unable to err, devoid of nuance, the object of our devotion. Given that the Qur’an so vehemently warns us against associating partners with Allah and following our wise ones blindly, it would seem that we have lost the plot. We have begun taking our scholars and preachers as lords beside Allah — the very trait the Qur’an condemns amongst the People of the Book.
