This morning, I took our eldest to an open day for a sixth-form college they’re thinking about attending next year.

Just like that, they’re all grown up, plotting their course, making plans for the future.

I admit, this has taken me by surprise, for it seems like only yesterday they were sweet infants, so dependent.

A decade and a half has zipped past, just like that. What about the previous? By contrast, those years seemed slow, requiring patience.

So here we are, watching the upcoming generation that will replace us. Here we are, enjoining them to learn the lessons of our lives.
