This will have to be my bugbear of the moment: YouTube videos which include the capitalised phrase “DESTROYED” in their title. “Such and such DESTROYS such and such.”
It’s not that I’m expecting someone to literally destroy their opponent with their laser eye rays, turning them into a neat steaming heap of ash on the ground. It’s just it’s generally the clickbait title for a very boring conversation between two people of opposing views talking over each other.
“Destroys” suggests someone won the debate, positing a convincing argument based on clear facts, and made their interlocutor look very silly indeed. Perhaps they left the studio crying or shaking, swearing never to utter a word in public again.
But no: it’s just two people with fixed views having a row in public, neither of them shifting ground. The video should really be titled, “Such and such causes such as such to raise his voice a little, but honestly you’d be better off watching that guy mowing some random bloke’s yard for free.”
Am I just showing my age, or is the internet really dumb these days?
