The killer feature I was holding out for in the new Samsung Z Flip 5 was not a larger cover display, but support for the excellent DeX desktop mode.

The latter might have convinced me to follow my wife in embracing that folding form factor. As it is, I suspect I will hold onto my diminutive Galaxy S8 until it fails.

Then again, having prolonged the life of a Surface Pro 3 with an unsupported install of Windows 11, perhaps I will survive the disappointment of emergent tech.

A lot of tech we throw out because it is no longer on trend is perfectly serviceable a decade on. We don’t have to chase after the very latest shiny tech, especially if it offers no real upgrade over what came before.

No need to mourn the flip flops of big tech. It’s time to take ownership and take back control of these incredible machines within our clutches, with or without the latest must-have feature.
