Nations really should limit the number of years and terms an individual stands as leader. Why? Because once they see their survival and longevity as their ultimate objective, they will do anything to remain in power.
If they came to office promising change and reform — aims they may well have delivered on — eventually they will do whatever the people demand, even if it’s against their best interests.
So they will relax building regulations intended to save lives, because they think it will win them votes. They tear up peace accords because the nationalists are agitating against them. In the end, they must jettison their principles in the service of staying in power.
Really we need leaders who see themselves as administrators: servants of the people, who humbly recognise their own humanity. People who recognise that, yes, others could do this job after them. Let them serve their term — and serve it well — but then just gracefully move on, making way for the next administrator of the nation.
Those that cling to power tend to take the nation down with them. So it ever is for those who think they can dictate God’s timetable, hatching plots and plans. No, but if the One wishes to bring the powerful low, so it will be.
Nations rise and fall. So do their leaders, and supporters. Be just says the Book. Walk on the earth with humility. Our leaders should reflect.
