There couldn’t have been a much worse time to venture to the office than this morning. Torrential rain. Several flash floods along the way. Multiple road closures. Traffic gridlock.

This forty mile trip is trying at the best of times, but this was something else. The journey took me three and a half hours, door to door, not to mention much ingenuity along the way.

Why bother? Why not just abort and send apologies? Well, this is the call of duty. I agreed to take care of a new starter, whose manager jetted off on holiday on the very day they started.

I’ve witnessed the way new employees have been treated before this, and I didn’t want this one to suffer the same fate. Duty means persevering even through a deluge to offer a very warm welcome.

I hope I discharged my duties faithfully.
