Senior leaders are falling like dominoes, which doesn’t instil much confidence in those of us further down the chain.

They are stressed by their jobs, but they’re also stressed by the cost of living.

Having risen to those heights, they invested in all the trappings — a nice house in a nice neighbourhood, with the nice cars outside, and kids at private school.

But all those prizes now seem to cost a fortune to maintain. Less the blessings they seemed, more a curse.

Where to go now to escape the unceasing stresses? Only taking stepping stones from one job to another, it seems.

They certainly can’t afford to step down to a less stressful role with lower pay. If only they had stayed in their lane, they might now think.

All of the finer things, which once seemed so appealing, now feel like a weight around their necks.

Those that can might pursue a remote role which enables them to move to a less expensive area.

Others might set themselves up as consultants, taking on short-term contracts they can escape at will.

But most will just keep on climbing the ladder, however ill-suited they are for their next role, exiting each time the stress gets too much.

As for the left-behind? They will just stay in their lane, keeping their heads down as best they can, lest the stresses from above knock them down too.

Dominoes, all of us. Who will be the next to fall?
