According to my taxi driver, our local imam and a few old folk speak Punjabi, whereas the bulk of the community speak Urdu.
I always thought it was the other way around. Who’s to say? Sometimes, I think even the people from that community don’t really know what’s going on.
It took a Punjabi in a neighbouring town who couldn’t understand a thing to establish that what everyone thought was Punjabi was in fact Pahari or Pothwari.
And you ask me why I have turned elsewhere for guidance? You have to attach yourself to those you understand and can relate to. Otherwise, you’re just playing dressing up.
