It’s amazing to think my first job way back in 1995 was testing a geographic information system for a major electricity supplier.

Amazing because the network engineer I’ve been waiting for all week announced on his arrival that he couldn’t connect my property because the cable is delivered via an electric pole, which he cannot climb.

Amazing that almost 30 years ago, I was involved in a system that connected utilities data to digitised maps, enabling engineers to ascertain available services prior to visit.

Amazing that today this engineer was sent out without that information and — overhearing a conversation with his office — was advised to check his next jobs on Google Streetview.

What now for me? Who knows? Apparently there are no systems available to provide this crucial information.
