Could the Christian activists slathering over Tommy Robinson’s sudden Damascene Conversion be any more ill-informed?
Jumping on the bandwagon of a weekend of nationalist marches, they profess Christ is King in the face of the Muslim hoardes, which threaten to take over this sceptred isle.
Only, most of the nationalists they hope to appeal to are members of a completely different demographic, soon to outnumber Christians of every denomination.
Contrary to their protestations, the most rapidly growing constituent from a faith perspective is those that profess no faith at all: 37% of the English population at the last census, creeping up on Christianity at 47%.
At this rate, no religion will soon be the dominant force in English society. All non-Christian faiths combined are professed by just 10% of the population.
The question the politicised evangelists really need to answer is what is actually replacing Christian culture across the West, if anything at all?
Might now be a time for introspection and serious soul-searching amongst the faithful? Where have they been in the national conversation? How have they demonstrated the relevance of their call?
Certainly, now is not the time for jumping on stage with demagogues and rabble-rousers intent on coopting religion for political gain.
May God protect us from mendacious fanatics, but instead send us guides who invite to the path of goodness by the light that eminates from their being and noble deeds.
