It’s funny to think of the confusion when I first started moving amongst Muslim cultures.

Chief bemusement: the manner of younger Muslims addressing their elders as uncle or auntie out of deference.

In those early days, I thought everyone was related. Imagine being with the Kazmis, and they invite the Azmis and Al-Azamis.

It took me ages to realise that neither were Uncle Azmi and Uncle Al-Azami related, but nor were the hosts despite that constant refrain whenever they were served.

To say I was befuddled would be an understatement.

So just imagine the confusion of guests today when they hear me addressed as uncle by the children of friends. I must have a lot of siblings!
