Nobody protests for Sudan. I wonder why.

Another humanitarian crisis at breaking point as famine looms for 25 million people.

Yet more war crimes as the factions perpetrate unspeakable atrocities against the civilian population.

But this is a conflict zone that will not animate us, stirring us into an emotional frenzy to advocate for peace.

At most, we’ll cast a few coins into the collection plate. At worst, we’ll simply turn away nonplussed.

Some conflicts we claim, petitioning on behalf of our brethren. But when it’s brethren vs brethren, we must look the other way.

And our sisters in faith, whom we usually hold in high esteem, rushing to honour them against the assault of their enemy?

For these women, we are silent, in the face of reports of mass rape and abducted children.

Our humanity doesn’t seem to extend to Africa, or to lands torn apart by rival generals vying for power.

Give us simple conflicts, easy to understand. Good guys vs bad guys. Don’t expect us to hold ourselves to account.
