As times passes, it occurs to me that career progression must mostly be about having the confidence to put yourself forward for new opportunities, and self-belief to pursue roles outside your current experience or expertise.
It certainly doesn’t seem to be about skills, competence or what you know. I suppose the idea is that the higher you go, the more you surround yourself with those who do know what they’re doing, and you grow content simply leading them.
The worry for those just bluffing, though, is that those they surround themselves with are not competent either. That’s where the stack of cards risks falling flat. Perhaps that’s why the supremely confident pass through roles at whirlwind pace.
