Don’t talk to me about terrorism if you rejoice in the killing of innocents on the other side.

“There are no innocents,” you say.

Which is exactly what the terrorists say when they butcher and maim indiscriminately.

So it turns out you’re no different. You’ve both lost your humanity. Both ways are barbarism at its worst.

“Fight those that fight you alone.” That is the rule of war. “But do not transgress the limits.” That too.

The notion of “terror bombing” dreamed up in the war rooms of London, Berlin and Washington a century ago has no place in any ethical arsenal.

Maniacal psychopaths are not our teachers. They are aberrations, the exception to the rule.

Without a doubt, these past three weeks many have revealed themselves and what they really stand for.

Not for human rights or against barbarity, that’s for sure. It turns out it was never about either. It’s just about sides.

Those that demand national days of mourning for lives lost, writing millions of words in defence of civilisation, have now let the mask slip.

It was never about right and wrong, good versus evil, morality or virtue. It was about lives you deemed worthy, deserving of honour, respect and the right to life, and those you don’t.

Hypocrisy on full display for all the world to see. Newspapers which have made it their task to dehumanise whole peoples for a hundred years insist on telling us these are moral battles.

Need we remind their readers that a century ago, these same newspapers successfully dehumanised the Jewish people of Europe, facilitating their greatest catastrophe?

And before that the diverse peoples brutally colonised across Africa and Asia, their struggles for self-determination and freedom undermined by yet more columns, editorials and sensational headlines.

Good people mourn the innocent dead on all sides. They don’t play the supremacists’ game, sifting civilians into categories of worthy or unworthy.

Good people mourn for all innocents victims everywhere, friend or foe. If you rejoice in the killing of innocents, I disown you.
