While many of my brethren seem to be lurching to the right, knocked off course by the so-called culture war and post-modern gender issues, I feel that society as a whole could do with a little socialism.

Young people leaving school could do with a steer into valuable careers. How else are we going to solve the crisis in care for the elderly and ill? Skills and labour gaps will need central planning and investment.

Access to affordable housing needs to be treated as an urgent priority. Rising poverty seeks urgent redress. Education and health inequalities likewise.

I don’t know how we took our eye off the ball, and allowed ourselves to be distracted by identity politics in place of pursuing meaningful societal change.

How can we build a better society for all? This is the question of the moment. How to offer a positive alternative to what is currently on offer? How to seed hope in people’s lives?
