If we should take anyone as a role model, let it be Dr Tetsu Nakamura, who devoted his life to improving the lives of the people of Afghanistan.

Throughout a life of service, this Japanese doctor opened health clinics, built hospitals and dug a network of irrigation canals, transforming barren land into fertile agricultural fields, capable of sustaining the local population.

Tragically, he was killed in an ambush by militants in 2019, aged 73. Nevertheless, the work he started lives on, whereas the actions of his assassins have just blown away like dust.

Given the choice between leaving a lasting legacy which improves the lives of the people — sadaqah jariyah — or one which causes nothing but destruction, be like Uncle Nakamura. Be with those who plant seeds of hope, fed by flowing waters.
