There’s too much work for one person, but the truth is that everyone’s feeling this way. Right across the organisation there’s a single person doing the work of a team.
I moved into my new team not because I thought they were ace, but because I felt impotent to effect change from the other side of the fence. But now I simply find myself absorbing ever more work from the rest of the team.
If before there was a frustration that nothing ever got done, now the frustration is that I’m expected to do the work of a whole team, both the important and the mundane. I’ve had a decade dealing with the skills deficit, but this is the worst I’ve ever known it.
I don’t know how it came to this, except perhaps the inability to attract talent due to piss poor pay, a hostile environment policy and the attention deficit disorder of a generation raised on social media. I’m a very patient man, but patience is wearing thin.
