I really should develop some craft or skill, for downstairs I have space for an amazing workshop. But what? Every effort of mine turns out to be an almighty bodge.

Carpentry? Nope. My hands don’t seem to have the requisite dexterity. Metalwork? It’s nearly thirty years since I last picked up a welder. Pottery? That could be therapeutic. Mechanics? I wouldn’t even know where to start.

My favuorite YouTube channel of all is Kris Harbour’s. He does all of these and more. He’s a true inspiration to many of us yearning for a different kind of life. But his work ethic is way beyond anything most of us could muster: he works seriously hard.

Perhaps I should find myself a craftsman who will let me be their apprentice. Would this be odd in middle age, or is it the sensible thing to do in preparation for the years of uncertainty to come? Perhaps it will make a man of me.

Such is the call of the basement, simply crying out to be turned into a wonderful workshop.
