While warning of the underhand plots and plans of Zionists, racists and other assorted bogeymen, the self-aware would add, “So don’t be a tit.”

And by tit they would mean, “Don’t be a hypocrite.” Or, “Don’t be immoral.” Or, “Don’t lie and cheat.” In short, don’t behave in a way which provides those assorted bogeymen with ammunition they can use against you.

Don’t, for example, commit fraud. Don’t give people half-measures in business transactions. Don’t take out your business rivals with baseball bats or bullets.

Certainly, don’t have affairs while preaching chastity. Don’t ply vulnerable girls from broken homes with drugs and alcohol, then force them to perform degrading acts with all your mates, young and old.

Don’t do anything which your faith proscribes or forbids. Try to be squeaky clean. While all mankind is destined to sin and err, at least avoid the major prohibitions, clear cut as they are. Avoid all which causes harm, to you or anyone else.

Then there would be no need to issue that vacuous platitude that you’ve been neutralized by your morality, because the opposite would be true. You would be vindicated by your morality.

Your opponents would see that you’re upright and straight. They would testify that you’re honest and fair. They would have to admit, “These are good people, and we only hate them because we’re tits.”

Be upstanding and righteous. Walk on the earth with humility. Feed the poor and needy. Look after widows and orphans. Live with your women with kindness. Free those bound by slavery. Be merciful to those in your care. Witness to the truth even against yourself.

If those making underhand plots and plans do then come for you, be content that your conscience is clean. Perhaps you will earn that ultimate station as witness to truth. Isn’t that what we all aspire to, after all, to be counted amongst the Siddiqin, Shuhada and Saliheen?
