In the ever-present scorecard of England vs Turkey, the kids believe they have the upper hand.
They list everything they believe is better in Turkey. I jokingly call them racist. They jokingly reciprocate.
But at last we’ve found something better in England we can all agree upon. That is the TV programme, MasterChef.
Every evening they insist on watching MasterChef Turkiye for hours on end, despite its excruciatingly contrived format. In this drama of personalities and minor celebrities, food and cooking barely get a look in.
A minor victory for Old Blighty then. I would list other pros of my native land, but rational argument is not a factor in this debate. These are emotional battles.
The kids, right now, see their future in this land. I see the pros and cons of both, the good and bad of each.
Where we end up, only God knows. None of us knows the land in which we will die, nor our circumstances at that time.
The real question is not how nations score, but how we ourselves fair in that weighty record of our lives. What will our scorecard look like at the end?
