Sometimes you have to bite your tongue. This is especially true if you are a guest. In these cases it is best to tune out, choosing silence.

A social gathering is no place for an argument or a cynical rebuttal: just leave them to their opinions, and pray for an interruption or natural pause instead.

At such gatherings we will encounter populist faith: the gospel according to WhatsApp. Here we are suddenly forced to contemplate whatever is exercising the chattering masses. A very different faith to the one I hold dear.

In such moments it is best to keep your head down, not confess that you may be of the awful fraternity already condemned for some misdemeanor or other.

No, just utter a wee prayer: for a change of topic, or the arrival of another guest looking for a seat. Once more I recall the reasons for my self-imposed exile from self-righteous spaces.
