The cost of, well, everything means that the present has become the age of self-repair by necessity. Whereas in the past I might simply have bought something new or commissioned a professional to provide a service, everything has become so expensive that I’m forced to at least attempt a repair several times first. Those earlier responses have become the last resort.

The latest of these, the broken garage door which collapsed on my head this afternoon. Briefly, I admitted defeat, recognising I would just have to accept the last extortionate quote after all. But then, after realising those prices excluded VAT, I was having second thoughts. So instead I’m scouring the web for parts to make a repair.

A few bolts, plates, washers and cotter pins should surely be sufficient. Who could possibly forget that I have an A-Level in metal work? I still have a piece of my coursework welding to this day. Surely the time has come to make use of that old skillset of mine. So here we go again: expect much swearing and scraped skin, but another bodged repair is imminent.
