I tend to have an optimistic view of others, believing that everyone has the potential to change.
Some say this is a positive characteristic, whereas others would say I am simply extremely naive.
The latter could well be right, of course. How often has it only belated occured to me that some people have no conscience at all?
It’s true that I take what people say on face value. I find it hard to believe they would openly lie and cheat in their common interactions.
But then there are many reasons they may do so. They may fear legal repercussions, damage to reputation or simply embarrassment.
Perhaps the lie is calculated; perhaps merely accidental. And there I go again, giving them the benefit of doubt. Seventy excuses, and then some.
