Yes, of course we support the nation and its people resisting invasion and brutal occupation. Yes, of course we support those who have been wronged, forced from their homes. Yes, of course we support their right to fight back against aggression and tyranny. We will always support that right.
Just note that if we were the aggressor, if those tanks rolling in and bombs raining down were ours, we would call the resistance insurgents and militants, and deny them that right. If we were in the place of the invaders, as we have been in recent times, we would not be on the side of the people. No, for resisting, we would call them terrorists, and ourselves liberators.
Both the victims and the aggressors hold a mirror up before us. But most of us choose not to see, closing our eyes in case we catch a reflection which may repulse us. Voluntary amnesia is more palatable than acknowledging and addressing our own evils. We believe it’s better to pretend we are different than to hold ourselves to account.
