The fitna my generation had to contend with was the scourge of terrorism, each act of wanton barbarity tarnishing the reputation of the faithful everywhere.
The fitna of this generation is the circus of bearded influencers, who believe they are calling people to faith but are in fact scaring good people away.
With their risible performances in glorious technicolor in full public view, on every platform, they now have the horrendous power to both guide and misguide.
If they started out a decade ago reaching minuscule audiences through street activism, now they have a reach of millions, and untold influence, for both good and bad.
My generation, which has been through all of this before, knows to ignore the online cesspit, and wander on, attempting to live good lives far away from those braying crowds. But what of that youthful generation?
I fear for them. How will they weather that storm? Of course, every generation is assigned its test, each fitna designed to separate gold from all the rest. These heavy trials are not mere accidents of chance.
Do the people think that they will be left to say, “We believe” and will not be tried?
Quran 29:2
To the always-online generation, I’d petition them to leave the clowns to their lunacy, and look elsewhere for guidance. Daily they reveal themselves to have no wisdom, courting dubious celebrities and controversy, thinking it will extend their reach, when all it really does is bring the gutter to the masses.
Leave all that, and busy yourself serving those in need. A faith which is just words is not worth much. Concern yourself with the needs of the poor and destitute. Focus on what we are called to: to establish justice, oppose tyranny, witness to truth, give full measure, pursue safety and promote good health.
Just because the circus has come to town it doesn’t mean you have to join it. Be with those bringing about positive change in their communities, who are trying to build bridges rather than burn them. Seek out humble companions who call to a better way. That’s the only way to survive this fitna.
