The reason I finally killed off my LinkedIn account (again) turned out not to be my perennial blues — judging myself a failure against my peers — but paranoia.

In this age of phishing, social engineering and cybercrime, it occurred to me that my profile was leaking way too much information to anyone minded to target the infrastructure I’m responsible for.

So in the end, that was what persuaded me to close my account once and for all, quite quickly too, without much thought. No great soul searching required. I’m not looking for a job, or trying to increase my network. My real-life network is fine, and none of its members are on LinkedIn at all.

I think the only reason I joined in the first place was to make contact with folk I’d lost touch with along the way, which I managed to do, taking conversations offline. Mission accomplished. Job done.
