I do believe career progression is all about confidence, and very little about your actual skillset. Of course, if you don’t have the skills at all, you’ll be quickly found out, but that doesn’t mean it will be easy to get rid of you.
It can be painful sometimes, attempting to train senior colleagues who clearly don’t even have the basic skills required for a significant part of their job. But then, they probably say the same about me, listening to my disjointed speech.
I suppose it all comes down to fewer and fewer being tasked with doing more and more, taking on roles which traditionally would have been fulfilled by a multi-disciplinary team. Now we’re expected to be a jack of all trades, rather than highly skilled in a specialism. So, yep, we go easy on our colleagues, offering them support above and beyond…
Only to watch them gain that promotion and move on. Onwards and upwards.
