I honestly don’t understand this modern trend of spending tens of thousands of pounds on a wedding.
Those are not firm foundations. They don’t encourage the young to marry. Why start married life by putting yourself — or your family — in such a precarious state? I presume most of it is debt, or if not direct debt, difficulties in times to come.
For the cost of some weddings, you could put down a significant deposit for a house. Or you could feed the poor and destitute. Those are firmer foundations.
But then what do I know? I turned up for my civil marriage in a red Ford Fiesta. No helicopter entrance for ours. Just me, with a very big smile on my face, desperate to say, “I do.”
