Our lad has spent the day shadowing me at work. Hopefully it has been a bit of an eye opener, inspiring him if nothing else to work hard to get an interesting job. I think he was a bit alarmed to discover how much work was involved in, well, work.

We started the day dealing with emails, whizzing through service desk tasks, eyes glazing over at team meeting. We went on to investigate solutions for a problem, followed by some hands-on development work. His working day ended with me delivering two training sessions, taking the opportunity to wander off while I was engaged.

By 3pm he had had enough. Asked if he’d be interested in doing my job, he said, “I don’t think so.” I don’t blame him really. I wasn’t very inspired by my work experience, retrieving legal deeds from cold archives in dank cellars beneath Silver Street in Hull.

Let’s see if we can find him some more work experience to inspire him better next time. Anyone with a job worth aspiring to: please drop me a line. 🙂
