It really isn’t strange that an individual should express appreciation for a culture other than his own. If that seems peculiar, it is only due to the diet of political propaganda we have been fed for two decades which has tried to paint multiculturalism as a failed experiment consigned to the bin. I don’t subscribe to that worldview at all. I have never subscribed to a hierarchy of cultures. I embrace whatever is good in those around me.
O mankind! Indeed, We created you from male and female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may know one another. Surely the most noble of you in God’s sight is the most righteous among you. Truly is God all knowing, all aware.
Quran 49:13
A person’s worth is not based on the culture they belong to or the colour of their skin — however much contemporary social commentators push this narrative. Your worth is measured against how you actually live your life. Do good and your status will be raised high. Thus do I embrace whatever is good in the the cultures of others, even if I have no tangible link to those cultures at all.
