Only a fool would decide to do gardening with a bad back. But I am a fool.

It began with, “I’ll just do some light tidying up” and ended with me blitzing it.

Maybe I should have had second thoughts the moment I grasped hold of the stem of a nettle and stung my entire hand. But no.

On I went for another hour, filling a bag with rubbish, until: POP! Pop! There it went again.

This time, pure agony in the base of my back and then both hips. I’ve been lying on my back all afternoon, scarcely able to move.

All I can think now, “Let it be expiation for my sins.” The pain and the sting, both ferocious six hours on.

Here I am, just your average fool.
