Beware of envy, because it devours good deeds just like a fire consumes wood.

This is the reminder I invoke after a phone call with the grown-up son of a friend, setting out into a graduate career.

I claim not to be, but know I suffer the affliction of envy. I know it is my weakness. I am revealed by that pang of regret over my own shortcomings in failing to pursue that world.

This is where I must remind myself to be grateful for the blessing I have been bestowed with. This is where I must remind myself what it was I was pursuing. Here I must remind myself that we are have different standards and ambitions.

Envy will only lead to disaster. Better to counteract it with gratitude and compassion. Better to be content with the decree of my Lord.
