Look at yourself, O soul! You claim to have subdued your nafs, ahankar, your ego, but look how you perform: “Here I am, here I am, here I am!”

Look at your ego on full display, so proud of itself for absolutely nothing. Better you remember who you are: nothing, absolutely nothing. Go back where you came from, back into oblivion.

Nobody cared who you were then, and nobody cares now. Go back: back into yourself. Kill this mistaken pride. Already you’ve forgotten why you reappeared in the first place: to apologise. But now what? To perform before all the world, “Here I am, here I am, here I am!”

Wake up! You have lost your way, completely. You claim to know best, but you’re the worst of the worst. Get over yourself and your acute self-importance. Break your nafs. Disappear, back into your silent world. Go back! Go back where you came from, back into obscurity, unknown.

Oh my soul! Know that you’re no master. No, you’re still lost. Just a greyer version of the fool you always were. No, you haven’t lost the skin of a fool at all. The fool is still there, gazing back at you.

Go back: back into yourself. Remember who your Lord is: where there is ego, where is the One?
