It’s easy to feel despondent sometimes when your career doesn’t seem to be going where you want it to, or when you end up doing something completely different to all your previous learning, but here’s a positive take from a colleague this morning…

Life can take us in many different and unexpected directions.

Like yourself, don’t ask me what I am doing here – with a Masters degree, a twenty year career in journalism, five years as a diplomat, a published author…

We don’t always have control over all that happens in life. Just enjoy what you are doing.

I often rebuke myself for my lack of ambition when I was younger. Instead of following in the footsteps of friends who became directors, international lawyers, professors and diplomats, I have worked up the ladder through menial admin and technical jobs to a tentative status of semi-professional.

It lacks prestige, to be sure, but I am quite content. I may not change the world, but I can have a positive impact on those around me. Be happy with today.
