All of a sudden it occurs to me: if only I had had ambition. If only I had not left university with the blues; if only I had pondered graduate training schemes, opportunities, openings. If only I had had vision.
Yes, I have reacquainted myself with the wondrous things old friends have achieved. Directors, CEOs, international lawyers, professors, diplomats. Wondrous things!
Ah, but it is all water under the bridge. We are where we are. I have worked up the ladder through menial admin jobs to a status of semi-professional, only to look back on certificates whose only value was to cover cracks in the wall.
My role now only to fulfil the starring lead in a cautionary tale for my children as to the end of the lazy and unambitious, who see themselves too small to achieve anything in life. If only I had had ambition.
