Every time I take leave, the organisation remembers that I’m a single point of failure, and promises to do something about it. Then it forgets again as soon as I return, diligently working away unseen, until the next time I take a few days off.

I don’t know if others work for organisations with sprawling IT departments, but ours has always been consistently under funded, under resourced and under staffed. It’s only when disaster strikes that anything really changes. Usually such crises are a blessing in disguise.

As for us single point of failures, which teem in the organisation: we simply go on logging on even on days off to prevent another mega flap. That’s public service for you.
