So what is it that eats away within today, which causes this unease and unrest? Indeed: it is arrogance. The arrogance of my soul and my writing, and the realisation that it there in full view for everyone to see, dragging me down and far away from my desired destination. And how does this happen? The noise of the world and the clamour of the crowd sends me off in different directions, away from introspection and self-restraint. Instead of looking within at the vast diseases right in front of me, I find myself occupied by the matters of no real concern, which only increase me in self-righteousness and conceit. I wonder what comes next.

Monetising Islam almost always ends in tears — and the involvement of pious, sincere, righteous scholars is absolutely no guarantee of relief.

Good deeds

You who believe, do not cancel out your charitable deeds with reminders and hurtful words, like someone who spends his wealth only to be seen by people, not believing in God and the Last Day. Such a person is like a rock with earth on it: heavy rain falls and leaves it completely bare. Such people get no rewards for their works: God does not guide the disbelievers. — Qur’an 2:264


More and more I appreciate the wisdom of my mentor, who says that scholars should always have their own employment in order to maintain their independence from corrupting influences, be they state power or the lure of riches that come from selling religion.


Some people may read my frequent ramblings about the affairs of our community and conclude that I am anti-scholar — that I reject their guidance and leadership — but that is not the case.
