We read the <em>seerah</em> by Martin Lings (may Allah enlighten his grave), and the <em>Shifa</em> of Qadi Ayad RA. Every weekend we would read several chapters after <em>fajr</em> for a couple of hours. Would highly recommend it. My friends and I did this some years ago.
