Now that you have told them about their darkness, are you not going to extend your hand to them to see the light you have found?

Salamu 'alaykum,

I always found it interesting that the Brits are complaining about a minority "infestation", particularly the "Muslim" one that is bringing about a so-called Islamization of Britain, when in fact it was the Brits who colonized these countries and "Englishized", though ill fatally said colonized countries.

Then again, the brits too are being socially colonized by their former colonies to their west through mediums of of media and economics; i.e. Amerika.

Wa alaikum assalam,

To quote from an article I wrote back in 2007 (It is not Islamophobia):

I have never liked the term "Islamophobia". The misuse and corruption of the term "phobia" is an aside---although I could certainly explore this in some depth---for I also have some trouble with the term "anti-Semitic" where "racism" would do. I do not dispute that some Muslims face discrimination, that Islam is derided (as Christianity is) and damned, that some Muslims are attacked for their beliefs; I acknowledge these things, but my dislike of this term remains. I could go to some length in explaining why, but I'll focus on what's playing on my mind instead. It is being used in Britain (for this is all I know) as a mechanism of denial, a means of avoiding taking ourselves to account.

Were we like the best of people, I might not object to its use so much---in that case we really could decry irrational fear and prejudice---but we're not. We've become a self-pitying nation, sobbing about victimisation, wallowing in denial about the diseases overwhelming us. To lament forced marriage and domestic violence in the Muslim community is not "Islamophobia" (though it could be characterised thus if the focus was exclusively on Muslims, which it is not): it is an acknowledgment of reality. When I sat on the management committee of a charity that aimed to aid Muslim women in crisis for five years, the statistics about abuse were not made up, the imaginings of racists and politicians with foreign policy objectives. While this focus on PR remains, displacing pastoral care, thousands of real people must live with the consequences, their plight ignored. We are not in the world of hypotheticals, of disappointing words: this is the world of real lives, of the wellbeing of your sister, the happiness of your brother.

Yes, anti-Muslim prejudice is real and it hurts, but we have a lot of work of our own to do. Perhaps the thoughts of my Qur'an teacher will help:

Sorry the last link I gave you was wrongly pasted...doh!
I came across the story initially on Islamophobia Watch --- which is an excellent website but always leaves me feeling a bit morose after reading it. UmmahPulse tends to have much more analysis and is not as 'shouty' as MPAC.

Assalamualaykum

I agree with you. I can see the anger all around. I was wondering if it was just me but then one reads survey results and comments in the press and then you realise that Islamophobia is actually a growing phenomena.

I wonder what your opinion is on the latest survey by the British Survey of Social Attitudes and what it said about Islam? A good link summarising the results below:

Ummah Pulse: Uncomfortable statistics for British Muslims

Also what do you think about all those intellectuals who said anti-Muslim things last week?

Ummah Pulse: Making Fools out of the Cleverest of People

Anyway, excellent post, Jazak Allah Khair.
